Critical Reflection

                  Presentation on Logical Fallacies

Salient features of a good presentation:

·      Script : This  should be good enough to represent a holistic view of subject of the presentation. The narrative should be based on facts and free from bias.

·      Timing : The presentation should be timed as per requirement. Therefore, should be well rehearsed beforehand.

·      Voice tone : The pitch of voice should be loud enough so that it is audible to each one.   Unusually high or low pitch spoils quality of presentation.

·      Clarity : A good presentation defeats its purpose if  it fails to communicate with the audience. Each sentence should be clearly spoken with pause, where required, so that the audience is able to make out correct interpretation of the presentation.

·      Eye contact : The presenter should, at times, establish eye contact with the audience so that the audience is made to feel that the presenter is speaking for the audience.

·      Body language : The presenter should exhibit confidence before the audience. It is always better to rehearse presentation beforehand with a view to remove nervousness before presentation.

Critical analysis and plan for improvement  of  my presentation :

While writing script of the presentation, I tried to include all relevant points. However, I may have failed to describe it properly. Therefore, I need to sharpen my writing skills so that it precisely describes narrative I intend to convey to the audience. To improve I intend to pick up random topics and write small write- ups on the topics chosen. This way I hope to improve my self.

I tried to time the presentation properly and pitch of my voice was balanced.

The clarity aspect of  my presentation needs improvement. While observing my presentation I felt I could have spoken somewhat slowly and clearly applying pause where required. I think, I was  speaking continuously and didn’t realise to pause wherever required. While doing so I also need to ensure in future that  my presentation does not exceed the allotted time of presentation. I can improve this by practicing first in front of someone  and getting feedback of what needs to be improved further.

Eye contact  with  audience was yet another aspect which I found  missing in my presentation. I need to ensure that audience is in sync with me while I am presenting before them.  From the beginning of my presentation till the end, I didn’t had any eye contact with the audience which ultimately made my presentation flat. On the other hand, to improve upon this, I can practice in front of mirror to see whether   I am  going on right track or not.

My body language throughout  presentation  largely exhibited confidence though I think there is scope for improvement. I can however, video myself and can see how much confident actually I am while presenting. It is always better to rehearse presentation beforehand with a view to remove nervousness before presentation.

On the positive side, the pitch of my voice  during presentation was  adequate. Wherever required I raised pitch in order to make my point of view appealing to the audience. Also, the pronunciation was quite good, though I think I should try to perfect it even better.

Essential Questions

Q1- To what extent, do model help us solve problem?

Whenever mankind comes across challenges posed  by nature, we try to solve it. We try to analyse pattern of a challenge  and based on that a workable solution is achieved or the problem is analysed. The pattern of a challenge or natural happening is presented in the form of a model which is prepared to guide us for the present  and  future.

Q2- A lot of ecology is based on models and many people deny the existence of ecology problems ( i.e. climate change) because of this . Is science always correct? Should there be a debate?

While there is no doubt that models do help us to solve ecology related problems. However, we need to understand that the pattern of challenges posed by nature undergoes changes from time-to-time. Therefore, we must be prepared to make alternation in the existing models, as per requirement, so that a workable solution is available to us at all times. Therefore, as no solution is static, therefore, we need to debate the analysis of the various models from time-to-time.

Photography Techniques!

Shoot straight up - While using this technique, the camera is positioned upwards slightly tilted with a view to capture very tall objects in a shot. It offers a "worm's eye view". A worm's eye view is a view of something as if the viewer is  a worm.  In this picture the camera is pointed straight down to capture particular shot of trees.

Low angle - In this technique, people usually take shots from ground level. It makes the picture looks interesting because people generally do not take pictures from this point of view. To take these kind of pictures, you really have to get down low to match the ground level which will add a new dimension to the picture.

Tilting the camera - In this technique, you tilt the camera little bit so that the object creates a imaginary diagonal line. This gives an amazing formation to the picture. "It usually changes the horizontal and vertical lines into diagonal". In this picture below I have tilted the camera which automatically adds a new angle to my picture. Another picture is taken from internet. You can see this image from here!

Frame - Framing the objects gives another look and adds an extra dimension to the shot. In this technique, it draws attention to the object of the image. In some images a slightly blurred frame can add depth to the shots but on the other hand, some images needs to be shot with a frame in focus. There are many other ways of framing a photo. Its not necessary that the frame has to be around four edges, it can be just one or edges of your shot as well.

Eye level - In these types of shots, the camera is placed at the object's height. These shots are usual and common because they are neutral. These shots stays the same as we see them in real life. It is also called "standard" because the shots are generally taken from a height of 4 to 6 feet from the ground. These shots are taken from standing at a normal distance.

Money is for Spending

MONEY IS FOR SPENDING!

Arguments-

  • Money cannot buy all required things in life.

  • Money has not resulted in prosperity at the individual and at the national level as well. Yet we all run for money

  • Money should be saved for future expenses.

Money !!! The name produces sparkle in the eyes of one and all, world over, whenever one talks about it. Indeed so, it is in a way the lifeline of anyone’s decent existence on earth,  motivational tool for many, and for the not-so-materialistic person, a means for survival.
Having said that, it is equally important to understand that money cannot buy all required things in life. For instance, disease free health at all times, desire to control all things in life in a way one wants, and most importantly SATISFACTION. We find umpteen instances in our daily life where we see that money alone has not resulted in prosperity at the individual and at the national level as well. Yet we all run for money. Strictly speaking, most of the time we believe that spending leads to satisfaction of our wants/desires which is not the case, always.
Let us try to understand the concept of money and its related aspects. While there is no doubt that earning money is important for decent living. However, the quantum of money to be spent in relation to one’s earning is a debatable issue and varies from person-to-person, as per spending habits and prevailing custom in a society or a nation.  Generally speaking, we should first-of-all attempt to define decent living, based on one’s necessities and preferences. Having defined broadly, one should evaluate one’s earning capability in present and future  and requirement of money for achieving the goals in life for (a) basic needs e.g. food, clothing, shelter, education, health and light entertainment or hobbies ; and (b) for  meeting luxurious standard of living, if one so desires, e.g. purchasing branded clothes, spending lavishly. This is dependent on one’s taste  for such living and the earning capacity.

So while one should spend money as per requirement, it is very important to make sure that a certain amount of money, based on one’s requirement in future MUST be set aside so that in the event of  any unforeseen expenditure, one is prepared to meet the financial obligation. Also we should not forget that money may buy us many  things in life, but remaining contended with spending as per one’s ability to spend is more important in life.

Therefore to summarise, one should spend wisely to live a better life.

Essential Questions and Mini Me!

Mini Me Story

In order to recover from a typical illness, the doctors who treated me tried every possible permutation & combination. But in  vain.  One fine day, a team of doctors thought of experimenting with my ailment and decided to use a combination of certain medicines. Over the next few days I noticed I was shedding weight quickly. Not only that, when   I began to loose my height and developed a strange change in my features, every body around became worried. Over the next few days I reduced myself to 1/10th of my actual size and became unrecognisable due to complete change in features as well. All around me things suddenly started looking very big so much so that taking out personal things from wardrobe /cupboards became very difficult for me. Even the steps for movement inside in my not –so- big home appeared a very big task for me. While on the terrace, a sudden gush of strong wind would terrify me about the chances of being thrown away by the strong wind.  Relative to my size and weight, all things around me looked very huge and bulky. The room chair which is about 3’ x 2’ x 2’ suddenly appeared to look very big and unsuitable for me. Even a bottle of water of 1 litter was too uncomfortable for me, given my reduced height of about 0.56 feet and weight of just about 6 kgs. Likewise, all other objects around me looked disproportionate to my height and weight.Movement outside my home was just not possible, in order to save me from the strange looks and volley of questions of one and all. Life in fact became hell for me for not being able to move out of solitary confinement.

After about a month or so, however, a team of experts from all around the world was constituted who bravely faced the challenge and came up with an injectable dose of medicine. To the surprise of every one I responded very well to the treatment and recovered to my original shape and size. Remembering the trauma now, I wonder how  prone we are to strange  happenings  and will we ever be able to get answers to  all the seemingly miraculous developments around us ??

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

Q1- How small is small?

It is a relative term. We have to associate it with a certain thing and upon comparison we may say how small is small. For example, if we were to say how small is a chair, then we need to compare chair with other objects around , say table, other chairs etc. This way one could define how small is the chair vis-a-vis other objects. For example, a chair of 2’ x 2’ x 2’ is smaller than a table of 6’ x 3’ x 4’. By relating one object with the other, we visualise and get a fair idea about the dimensions of the object we are talking about. In fact, strictly speaking, we should never use the words like small/big to define any thing. Rather, we should  associate any such object with dimension/measurement, be it approximate,  to bring out true description of the object.

Q2- Why does size matter?

Size matters because without size the description of any object would become meaningless. Rather, if we were to describe anything just in casual terms without accurate understanding of its dimension then it would be not of any use to any one. For example, if we ask the shopkeeper to bring a carpet for our drawing room, then without giving him the accurate size, the shop keeper would be left amused and would bring the carpet according to his understanding which in all probability will not fit in my  drawing room of dimension 14’ x 10’. Therefore, for all objects, howsoever big or small, description with size always matters.

If I am 1/10th of my size!

It would be very difficult for me if my size is 1/10 of my actual size. Their would be more disadvantages rather than advantages. The world would become very huge for me I will face a lot of difficulties in my day to day life. Whether it is related to school or household work. I don't think life would be fun or interesting. These things can tell  why I won't be interested in becoming /10 of my actual size. To begin with, all the dimensions of the length, breadth and height all around me would appear very big . Besides, the day to day activities using cupboard, door, chair, table, clothes and personal accessories etc. would frustrate me. Further, if I am 1/10 of my actual size then my relationship with my family members, friends etc. would become complicated. Rather, my entire range of activities  would become miserable.

The biggest problem in such a case would be how others would view me. There would be some who would pity on my small size, some would make fun of me and some would be willing to help me in every possible way. However, my view is one should face such situation boldly because I would have to live with this size all my life. By acting boldly I would gain confidence, respect and admiration from others.
