HAPPIER STUDENTS GET HIGHER GRADES IN  SCHOOL

Questions!

Q1- What  do you  notice about the tone of the article?

The article attempts to explore the relationship between performance of the students in school vis-a-vis their happiness index. During the course of research, the researchers tried to obtain answers to the two questions : (a) what is happiness ? and (b) what makes students happy ?

The topic is of utmost importance, especially in today's stressful times when there is a mad race to outdo one another. Therefore, the topic requires comprehensive research well supported by a large sample of data. The article only presents an illustrative account of the topic.

As one would agree, happiness is defined as a state of feeling positive about self , one & all, and towards one's surroundings which transforms into   passion to excel. The same hold true for students as well. If a student feels at ease at school,  he/she is likely to do well and would drive him/her to do better and better because 'feel good' factor boosts confidence which eventually translates  into better performance.

To another question regarding what makes students happy,  the topic explores that  students' relationship with teachers and peers defines their happiness. Meaning thereby that if a student finds his/her teachers and fellow students supportive then he/she would feel happy and satisfying.

Q2- What do you notice about the verb tenses used in the article?

The verb tenses used in the article are mostly Present Perfect Simple and Past Perfect Simple.

Q3- What do you  notice about the headline?

The headline measures happiness index of students with there grades. However, we must not forget that basic instinct/inborn behaviour of a student also plays a vital role in shaping his/her happiness index and is directly proportional to the state of happiness. For example, if a student possesses satisfying nature since birth then he/she is more likely to be happy at all times vis-a vis those who do not possess such nature. This is because he/she would  find every situation satisfying and would try to make most of the given situation/surroundings without any reason to complain. Such a student sees every situation howsoever good or bad as an opportunity to excel rather than finding fault and is therefore bound to be loved by teachers and students alike. Such students, because of their basic nature and dedication rise to fame as leaders, scientists, businessmen, and social workers etc. Abraham Lincoln, and Florence Nightingale are two such examples.

  1. This sounds like an interesting article Aayushi. Do you think the research is right in your case?

'Tone' is different to content. You have provided an interesting summary of the article, which is the content. Tone is more about the language used and how it makes you think or feel about the content.

The headline is supposed to grab your attention and make you want to read the article. Did the headline do that for you? How?
